shadowgotens are Shadow, in its purest state. They are born of shadows, given solid form by magic. Their appearance is entirely based on the will of their creators - in this case, Prince Lemmy. The how and why of this process is another tale entirely...

Lemmy's Notes: It's obvious where the inspiration for shadowgotens come from. But while they look like Son Goten of DragonBall Z (with whom I have a noteworthy obsession, admittedly), their nature is quite different. The CHEW mechanic comes from Goten's love of eating, but that's about the only notable similarity to their source material.

shadowgotens are shadows, and their mentality is fairly lopsided. They are certainly innocent, but not particularly cognizant beyond what's inherently obvious or what they've been taught. An unmeasured intelligence is present, ready to be awakened (or exploited) by the patient among us, but it's so layered beneath the primary concern of survival and finding the next chew that they can appear simplistic and dumb. They have a language amongst themselves all their own that at first listen is indecipherable chittering; when they attempt to mimic human speech it is usually flawed, so their communication with others is usually through actions, expressions and occasionally, pantomime.

There are currently four shadowgotens. (Well, aside from during the SERF/CHEW attack, where they somehow become a mob.)

Learning more about them means getting near the little buggers... probably why we don't know too much. http://i.imgur.com/asmJP2M.png

The shadowgotens originated during Lemmy's initial exploration of the shadow arts. How and why is still a mystery, and a tale to be revealed as the Prologue of Lemmy is expanded, but for the most part they were a sort of unwitting accident.

~~~ Rise of the shadowgotens ~~~
During his studies of the arcane arts, the Beautiful Mermaid became inexplicably drawn to the Shadow element. Why this is so has been a subject of debate among merhistorians. Some accounts say that the Beautiful Mermaid found a certain fascination with the unknown mysteries of what was perceived a rogue element. Others note that that Shadow, which in and of itself is not inherently evil, is nonetheless a force that consumes, and sought out a strong body with which to align and somehow "called" to him. Still another account makes reference to the prince's affinity for shadowpuppetry. But no matter the true impetus, the Beautiful Mermaid worked feverishly to learn this new discipline and gradually fashioned it into an effective tool... not knowing that it would do the same to him.
The First shadowgoten
As the desperate studies continued, a darkness began to enshrouded the Prince that became increasingly apparent to his closest aides. However, knowing that their enemies were of strange ability, their trust in the Prince's ability to control this aura, and to fall out of it once the danger had passed, were absolute.
They were wrong.
The transformation from sovereign to servant is a subtle one. Though his aides said nothing, even the Beautiful Mermaid noticed the slow onset of change... to his behavior, to his speech, to his manner of rule. But couldn't this have just as easily been a side effect of gearing up for war? Conflict was on the horizon, after all. Fighting with the surface world could break out any day if they chose to press their plundering further. Everyone in the mermaid court knew that the prince was different... off. But the conviction and confidence needed to study the problems of war made it easy to write off his behavior as just that- caused by the situation at hand, and not a new one growing in its place...
Skills: The primary ability of a shadowgoten is also their one great necessity, and that is to chew. The chew of a shadowgoten is prodigious indeed; their bite can be gentle enough to spare their toys, hardened to mangle alloys into submission and everything in between.
Contrary to the fears of potential victims, chewing is far more important than eating. Whereas the human process is to break food into useful compounds through internal digestion, nutrients for shadowgotens are absorbed mostly through the teeth during rigorous chew. This means that, in the case of organic food, they will usually chew on something until it has become bland of nutrients (or taste), rather than work to actively eat it, and in cases of large bounties often save food for later chews. When there are finally no nutrients worth chewing, they may eat or discard what's left.
Chewing is as much instinct as it is for absorbing nutrients, so having chew toys helps to satiate them between meals.
What they cannot chew on is immediately consumed. Blood is a favorite non-chew.
The shadowgotens also possess rudimentary understanding of shadow arts and have developed several noteworthy skills. While mostly harmless tricks in and of themselves, they are all used to fashion situations where they can achieve the primary goal of CHEW.
TRANSPARENT APPARENT: The shadowgoten can switch between solid and non-solid states. In a non-solid state, they maintain their shape but lose density, becoming like an illusion.
HELLEPORT: Shadowgotens can bridge instantaneous travel through large shadows that are in close proximity, entering one to reappear out of another in a crude teleport.
SHADOWSPLOSION: A ball of concentrated shadow that bombs into black snares, enshrouding the immediate area in deep, disorienting darkness that no light penetrates.
No light penetrates from the exterior boundary. Inside the dense fog, the red eyes of shadowgotens can definitely be seen.
I ATE THAT, WANT IT BACK?: If a shadowgoten consumes something capable of firing projectiles, they become capable of spewing it themselves. We do not know how or why this works, but it does.
DOUBLE/TRIPLE/QUADRUPLE SINGULARITY: Desperation move that is only able to be performed with multiple shadowgotens. When threatened by something non-chew, several shadowgotens can generate a black hole.
Unlike Lemmy's SHADOWPOOL, the black hole leads to a white hole in another universe, effectively stranding them until they find a black hole in that universe that leads to a white hole here.
Status-Based Abilities:
FOR THE LOVE OF CHEW: Attack/Defense raised.
PRIDE OF THE PACK: Special raised.
KARMA BLOOD SHAKE: Premium Item. Revives one or more party members.
General abilities include an emphasis on speed, with the ability to run great distances on two legs or all fours, as well as a capacity for sharing. Because sharing is caring!
Weaknesses: Physically weak to Light and light-based powers. Mentally, they are easily distracted by shiny things.
Weapon/Combat Power of Choice: Though the shadowgotens don't really make use of weaponry, they enjoy to play with Super Squirter water guns - perhaps the last vestige of Lemmy's former Mertopia.
Prince Lemmy
Their relationship with Lemmy is unclear, but obviously entails some sort of friendship.
Blood Kaiser Karma
The shadowgotens are quite fond of Karma, for she shares with them blood and chews, particularly steaks. They are occasionally spotted in Blood Country visiting the Kaiser and are considered respected friends of the nation.
